MAKETHESMALLESTDISTINCTION,HOWEVER,ANDHEAVENANDEARTHARESET

IFYOUWISHTOSEETHETRUTHTHENHOLDNOOPINIONFORORAGAINST.
THESTRUGGLEOFWHATONELIKESANDWHATONEDISLIKESISTHEDISEASEOFTHE
MIND.
WEWILLBEENTERINGthebeautifulworldofaZenMaster’sno-mind.SosanisthethirdZen
Patriarch.Nothingmuchisknownabouthim–thisisasitshouldbe,becausehistoryrecords
onlyviolence.Historydoesnotrecordsilence–itcannotrecordit.Allrecordsareofdisturbance.
Wheneversomeonebecomesreallysilent,hedisappearsfromallrecords,heisnomoreapartof
ourmadness.Soitisasitshouldbe.
Sosanremainedawanderingmonkhiswholelife.Heneverstayedanywhere;hewasalways
passing,going,moving.Hewasariver;hewasnotapond,static.Hewasaconstantmovement.
ThatisthemeaningofBuddha’swanderers:notonlyintheoutsideworldbutintheinsideworldalso
theyshouldbehomeless–becausewheneveryoumakeahomeyoubecomeattachedtoit.They
shouldremainrootless;thereisnohomeforthemexceptthiswholeuniverse.

EvenwhenitwasrecognizedthatSosanhadbecomeenlightened,hecontinuedhisoldbeggar’s
way.Andnothingwasspecialabouthim.Hewasanordinaryman,themanofTao.
OnethingIwouldliketosay,andyouhavetorememberit:Zenisacrossbreeding.Andjustas
morebeautifulflowerscancomeoutofcrossbreeding,andmorebeautifulchildrenarebornoutof
crossbreeding,thesamehashappenedwithZen.
ZenisacrossbreedingbetweenBuddha’sthoughtandLaoTzu’sthought.Itisagreatmeeting,the
greatestthatevertookplace.That’swhyZenismorebeautifulthanBuddha’sthoughtandmore
beautifulthanLaoTzu’sthought.Itisatarefloweringofthehighestpeaksandthemeetingofthose
peaks.ZenisneitherBuddhistnorTaoist,butitcarriesbothwithinit.
Indiaisalittletooseriousaboutreligion–alongpast,alongweightonthemindofIndia,and
religionhasbecomeserious.LaoTzuremainedalaughingstock–LaoTzuisknownastheoldfool.
Heisnotseriousatall;youcannotfindamorenon-seriousman.
ThenBuddha’sthoughtandLaoTzu’sthoughtmet,IndiaandChinamet,andZenwasborn.And
thisSosanwasjustneartheoriginalsourcewhenZenwascomingoutofthewomb.Hecarriesthe
fundamental.
Hisbiographyisnotrelevantatall,becausewheneveramanbecomesenlightenedhehasno
biography.Heisnomoretheform,sowhenhewasborn,whenhedied,areirrelevantfacts.That’s
whyintheEastwehaveneverbotheredaboutbiographies,historicalfacts.Thatobsessionhas
neverexistedhere.ThatobsessionhascomefromtheWestnow;thenpeoplebecomeinterested
moreinirrelevantthings.WhenaSosanisborn,whatdifferencedoesitmake–thisyearorthat?
Whenhedies,howisitimportant?
Sosanisimportant,nothisentryintothisworldandthebody,nothisdeparture.Arrivalsand
departuresareirrelevant.Theonlyrelevanceisinthebeing.
AndthesearetheonlywordsSosanuttered.Remember,theyarenotwords,becausetheycomeout
ofamindwhichhasgonebeyondwords.Theyarenotspeculations,theyareauthenticexperiences.
Whatsoeverhesays,heknows.
Heisnotamanofknowledge,heisawiseman.Hehaspenetratedthemystery,andwhatsoever
hebringsisverysignificant.Itcantransformyoucompletely,totally.Ifyoulistentohimthevery
listeningcanbecomeatransformation,becausewhatsoeverheissayingisthepurestgold.
Butthenitisdifficulttoo,becausethedistanceisveryverygreatbetweenyouandhim:youarea
mindandheisano-mind.Evenifheuseswordsheissayingsomethinginsilence;you,evenifyou
remainsilent,goonchatteringwithin.
Ithappened:
TherewasacaseagainstMullaNasruddininthecourt.Thecourtcouldnotprovemuch.Hewas
chargedwithpolygamy,havingmanywives.Everybodyknewaboutit,butnobodycouldproveit.

ThelawyersaidtoNasruddin,”Youremainsilent,that’sall.Ifyouutterasinglewordyouwillbe
caught.SoyousimplykeepquietandIwilllooktothematter.”
MullaNasruddinremainedsilent–deepdownboiling,inturmoil,wantedtointerruptmanytimes,
butsomehowmanagedandcontrolledhimself.OutwardlylookedlikeaBuddha,insideamadman.
Thecourtcouldn’tfindanythingagainsthim.Themagistrate,eventhoughheknewthatthisman
hadmanywivesinthetown,whentherewasnoproofwhatcouldhedo?Sothemagistratehadto
releasehim.
Hesaid,”MullaNasruddin,youarereleased.Nowyoucangohome.”
MullaNasruddinlookedpuzzledandsaid,”Er–YourHonor,whichhome?”Hehadmanyhomes
becausehehadmanywivesinthetown.
Asinglewordfromyouwillshowthemindinside;asinglewordandyourwholebeingisexposed.
Notevenawordisneeded;justagestureandyourchatteringmindwillbethere.Evenifyouare
silent,yoursilencewillnotrevealanythingotherthanthechatteringmonkeywithin.
WhenaSosanspeaks,hespeakstotallyonadifferentplane.Heisnotinterestedinspeaking;
heisnotinterestedininfluencinganybody;heisnottryingtoconvinceyouaboutsometheoryor
philosophyorism.No,whenhespeakshissilenceblooms.Whenhespeaksheissayingthatwhich
hehascometoknowandwouldliketosharewithyou.Itisnottoconvinceyou,remember–itis
justtosharewithyou.Andifyoucanunderstandasinglewordofhis,youwillfeelatremendous
silencebeingreleasedwithinyou.
Justhearinghere...WewillbetalkingaboutSosanandhiswords.Ifyoulistenattentively,suddenly
youwillfeelareleaseofsilencewithinyou.Thesewordsareatomic,theyarefullofenergy.
Wheneverapersonwhohasattainedsayssomething,thewordisaseedandformillionsofyears
thewordwillremainaseedandwillseekaheart.
Ifyouareready,readytobecomethesoil,thenthesewords,thesetremendouslypowerfulwordsof
Sosan–theyarestillalive,theyareseeds–theywillenterinyourheartifyouallow,andyouwillbe
totallydifferentthroughthem.
Don’tlistentothemfromthemind,becausetheirmeaningisnotofthemind;themindisabsolutely
impotenttounderstandthem.Theydon’tcomefromthemind,theycannotbeunderstoodbythe
mind.Theycomefromano-mind.Theycanbeunderstoodonlybyastateofno-mind.
Sowhilelisteningheredon’ttrytointerpret.Don’tlistentothewordsbuttothegapsbetweenthe
lines,nottowhathesaysbuttowhathemeans–thesignificance.Letthatsignificancehoveraround
youlikeafragrance.Silentlyitwillenteryou;youwillbecomepregnant.Butdon’tinterpret.Don’t
say,”Hemeansthisorthat,”becausethatinterpretationwillbeyours.
Onceithappened:
MullaNasruddinwascomingback,completelydrunk,intheweehoursofthemorning.Ashewas
passingbyacemeteryhelookedatthesignboard.Onitwaswritteninbigletters,capitalletters:
RINGFORTHECARETAKER–andthat’swhathedid.

Ofcourse,soearlyinthemorning,thecaretakerwasdisturbed.Hecameout,staggering,angry,
andwhenhelookedatNasruddin,absolutelydrunk,hebecameevenmoreangry.
Heasked,”Why?Whydidyouring?Whydidyouringforme?Whatisthematter?Whatdoyou
want?”
Nasruddinlookedathimforoneminute,silently,thenlookedatthesignboardandsaid,”Iwantto
know,whycan’tyouringthatdamnbellyourself?”
Itwaswritten:RINGFORTHECARETAKER.Nowhowtointerpretit?Itdependsonyou.
Don’tinterpret–listen.Andwhenyouinterpretyoucan’tlisten,becausetheconsciousnesscannot
dotwooppositethingssimultaneously.Ifyoustartthinking,listeningstops.Justlistenasyoulisten
tomusic–adifferentqualityoflisteningbecauseyoudon’tinterpret.Thereisnomeaninginthe
sounds.
Thisisalsomusic.ThisSosanisamusician,notaphilosopher.ThisSosanisnotsayingwords,he
issayingmore–morethanthewords.Theyhaveasignificancebuttheydon’thaveanymeaning.
Theyarelikemusicalsounds.
Yougoandsitnearawaterfall.Youlistentoit,butdoyouinterpretwhatthewaterfallsays?Itsays
nothing...stillitsays.Itsaysmuch,muchthatcannotbesaid.
Whatdoyoudonearawaterfall?Youlisten,youbecomesilentandquiet,youabsorb.Youallow
thewaterfalltogodeeperanddeeperwithinyou.Theneverythingbecomesquietandsilentwithin.
Youbecomeatemple–theunknownentersthroughthewaterfall.
Whatdoyoudowhenyoulistentothesongsofthebirds,orwindpassingthroughthetrees,ordry
leavesbeingblownbythebreeze?Whatdoyoudo?Yousimplylisten.
ThisSosanisnotaphilosopher,heisnotatheologian,heisnotapriest.Hedoesnotwanttosell
anyideatoyou,heisnotinterestedinideas.Heisnottheretoconvinceyou,heissimplyblooming.
Heisawaterfall,orheisawindblowingthroughthetrees,orheisjustasongofthebirds–no
meaning,butmuchsignificance.Youhavetoabsorbthatsignificance,onlythenwillyoubeableto
understand.
Solisten,butdon’tthink.Andthenitispossibleformuchtohappenwithinyou,becauseItellyou:
thisman–thisSosanaboutwhomnothingmuchisknown–hewasamanofpower,amanwho
hascometoknow.Andwhenhesayssomethinghecarriessomethingoftheunknowntotheworld
oftheknown.Withhimentersthedivine,arayoflightintothedarknessofyourmind.
Beforeweenterintohiswords,rememberthesignificanceofthewords,notthemeaning;themusic,
themelody,notthemeaning;thesoundofhissoundlessmind,hisheart,nothisthinking.Youhave
tolistentohisbeing,thewaterfall.
Howtolisten?Justbesilent.Don’tbringyourmindin.Don’tstartthinking,”Whatishesaying?”
Justlistenwithoutdecidingthiswayorthat,withoutsayingwhetherheisrightorwrong,whether
